Nowadays, there are a lot of creative ways to do a guest book. You also have the option not to do one at all. Like a wedding video, a guest book can be an extra cost. It just depends what's most important to you.
The word on the street is that you'll rarely look through your guest book, if ever. They kind of remind me of a year book, unless it's a good friend writing in it, you get the basic "congratulations".
They are also an additional cost and can be cause for congestion at the entrance. A guest book is just something for you to consider. Remember it's your wedding and you have your priorities.
